Diamond Tetra – Moenkhausia pittieri

In our opinion, this is one of the most underrated freshwater community fish! This gorgeous fish sparkles like a disco ball when settled in, is easy to care for and is very hearty!
This member of the characin family (family Characidae) is mainly found in shallow plant filled waters and slow moving tributaries in and around Lake Valencia in Venezuela, South America, though populations have dwindled to near extinction levels. Thankfully this fish is widely bred commercially for the hobby.
Sexes are easily distinguishable with males growing much longer dorsal fins and also tend to shine brighter as well.
Not only is this fish pretty peaceful it is not a picky eater either and will readily accept most frozen and dried foods.
