Description
The Dwarf Aquarium Lily, scientifically known as Nymphaea stellata, is a resilient, low-maintenance plant hailing from India. It’s recognized for its distinctive triangular leaves that transition in color from green to red or pink as it matures. This plant remains relatively small, typically under 5 inches, making it an excellent fit for smaller aquariums and paludariums. Notably, it may also produce lily pads that reach the water’s surface. Unlike some red plants, it doesn’t demand CO2 or intense lighting to display its vibrant red leaves, thriving even in low light conditions, providing a delightful burst of color to any aquarium.
Caring for the Dwarf Aquarium Lily is straightforward. When planting, ensure just a quarter of the bulb is submerged in the substrate to prevent rot. It will extend its roots into the substrate, occasionally creating a bulb suspended by its roots beneath a lush lily plant. Maintaining a warm water temperature is crucial, as it dislikes cold conditions. It’s important to note that the plant may lose its leaves periodically, but with proper care, new growth will emerge.
Leave it alone! It’s NOT dead! IT’S NOT DEAD! Unless the bulb is rotting – then it’s dead…..
Propagation is a breeze – you can separate and replant shoots with root structures.
To encourage a bushy appearance, occasional trimming promotes growth from the center.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, once established, the Dwarf Aquarium Lily grows rapidly and provides a sanctuary for small aquatic creatures such as shrimp, nano fish, and fry. It can truly shine as a captivating centerpiece in a planted aquarium, as I’ve personally experienced in my discus tank as you can see.
